How to Audit Your Pinterest Account for Better Reach and Clicks

(A Complete Guide for Bloggers, Creators & Small Business Owners)

If your Pinterest impressions are dropping…
If your clicks are low…
If your pins aren’t getting saved or discovered…

I’ve seen this a lot of times: this is the case when someone reach out out to me regarding my Pinterest management services. And I always say: then it’s time for a Pinterest audit.

A Pinterest audit is like a health check for your account – helping you identify what’s working, what’s hurting your reach, and what you need to fix to grow traffic again.

This guide walks you through how to perform a complete Pinterest audit that improves your reach, SEO, content performance, and overall results. This is my way of work when it comes to Pinterest strategy reviewing and improving!

I will show you what I am doing exactly – as a Pinterest strategy expert for more than 8 years! Let’s get started!

Why a Pinterest Audit Matters

If you are following my Pinterest blog where I cover many Pinterest tips and tricks, you will already know: Pinterest is not a traditional social media platform, it’s a visual search engine. This means Pinterest needs clear signals to understand (its algorithm needs to know you better before propose your content to the right people). This includes a clear message about:

  • who you are,
  • what your account is about,
  • who your ideal audience is,
  • and why your content should rank.

If those signals are weak or outdated, your reach drops.

A Pinterest audit helps you:
✔ Identify SEO issues
✔ Improve keyword targeting
✔ Optimize boards and pins
✔ Fix design mistakes
✔ Improve performance and click-through rates

Doing an audit every 3–6 months can dramatically improve your Pinterest visibility. So, here is my ready to go action plan:

🔍 Step 1: Review Your Pinterest Profile (SEO Foundation)

Your profile tells Pinterest what your account is about – so it needs to be clear, keyword-optimized, and focused.

Profile Optimization Checklist:

  • Profile name includes keywords. A good example: “Sarah Smith | Pinterest Manager & Blogger Growth”
  • Bio clearly states your niche + audience This means to Include keywords naturally. A good example: “Helping bloggers grow organic traffic using Pinterest SEO + pin design.”
  • Add your website URL and verify it with Pinterest – this is an absolute must-have!
  • Upload a professional profile photo or brand logo
  • Ask yourself: Is your profile cohesive? Your boards, topics, and pins should all align with one niche.

If your profile feels confusing, Pinterest won’t know who to recommend your content to – hurting your reach.

📌 Step 2: Audit Your Pinterest Boards (One of the Biggest SEO Signals for the Pinterest algorithm)

Your boards tell Pinterest what topics you create content for. So, if your boards aren’t optimized, your pins won’t rank well.

Board Audit Checklist:

  1. Are your board names SEO-friendly? Remember: avoid cute names like:
  • “Good Eats”
  • “Dream Home”
  • “Yum!”

Instead, use smart keywords like:

  • “Healthy Dinner Recipes”
  • “Blogging Tips”
  • “Home Office Design Ideas”
  1. Do your boards have keyword-rich descriptions?

Remember: write a 2–4 sentence description using target keywords and related terms.

A good example:
“Blogging tips for small business owners, bloggers, and creators. Learn how to improve blog design, SEO, and social media reach.”

  1. Are there irrelevant boards? If a board isn’t related to your niche:
  • make it secret, or
  • delete it (if it has no useful pins)
  1. Do you have enough niche boards? Remember: most accounts need 10–20 keyword-specific boards.

🎨 Step 3: Audit Your Pin Design (Critical for Clicks)

If your views are high but clicks are low, your pin design may be the problem.

✔ Pin Design Audit Checklist

  1. Is your text readable ON MOBILE?

Most Pinterest users are on phones. Always use vertical shape.
If text is tiny or competing with the background → low clicks.

  1. Are your colors and fonts consistent?

Remember: Brand consistency builds recognition and trust.

  1. Is the headline engaging?

Weak headline:
“Marketing Tips”

Strong headline:
“10 Google SEO Tips That Double Your Blog Traffic”

  1. Are your designs vertical (1000×1500 px)?

Square or horizontal pins perform poorly. I often see people are repurposing their Instagram posts, but they are square shape and are NOT optimized for Pinterest. Instead, rework your IG posts in a vertical shape and use text with strong SEO keywords overlays.

  1. Do your pins look modern?

Remember: Outdated designs = low engagement.

  1. Do you have a clear CTA?

Examples:

  • “Learn the Strategy”
  • “Get the Guide”

Remember: Your pin needs to invite the click.

🧠 Step 4: Audit Your Pinterest Keyword Strategy

In my experience, Pinterest SEO is often the missing piece for struggling accounts I’ve worked with.

✔ My Keyword Audit Checklist:

  1. Are you using Pinterest-native keywords? My pro tip here is: use Pinterest Trends + search bar suggestions.
  2. Also, ask yourself: Do you use keywords in these places (they are the right!)?
  • Profile name
  • Bio
  • Board titles
  • Board descriptions
  • Pin titles
  • Pin descriptions
  • ALT text on your website images
  1. Are your keywords too broad or too niche?

Broad: “Marketing”
Niche: “Social media marketing for food bloggers” (BETTER!)

📊 Step 5: Audit Your Analytics (Look for Patterns)

Pinterest Analytics shows you what to do MORE of – and what to stop.

✔ Analytics Audit Checklist. Look at your:

  • Top-performing pins
→ Refresh and recreate new versions
  • Outbound clicks
→ Which topics or designs drive traffic?
  • Low-performing pins
    → Remove or improve
  • Audience trends
→ What does your audience WANT from you?

Want a shortcut? Look at your Top Pins (Outbound Clicks) – this is your blueprint for future content.

🔁 Step 6: Audit Your Content Consistency

Remember that Pinterest rewards:

  • fresh pins
  • consistent activity
  • updated content

So, ask yourself:

  • How many fresh pins are you posting per week?
  • Are you repurposing content regularly?
  • Are you updating old pins?
  • Is your content aligned with seasonal trends?

Remember: Consistency is one of the top ranking signals on Pinterest.

🧹 Step 7: Remove or Update Low-Quality Pins

Most accounts I’ve seen have pins that drag down performance. Remove or hide pins that are:

  • outdated
  • badly designed
  • irrelevant to your niche
  • poorly optimized
  • low-quality images

Or simply switch the board to Secret to hide them without deleting. This works too!

🚀 Final Step: Create an Action Plan from Your Audit

Based on your audit, make a 30–60 day plan:

✔ Improve or redo your top 5 boards
✔ Refresh your highest-performing pins
✔ Create 5–10 new keyword boards
✔ Improve your profile name + bio
✔ Create new modern designs
✔ Post new pins consistently

Remember: A Pinterest audit gives you the roadmap you need to grow again!

💬 Final Thoughts: Auditing Helps Pinterest Understand You Again

Pinterest wants to show your content – but only if it understands:

  • what you post,
  • who your content is for,
  • and how helpful it is.

A proper Pinterest audit strengthens every SEO signal your account sends.
Remember: Better signals = better reach + more clicks + more traffic.
